The Avalanche Run also features tap tempo and expression pedal control of any parameter. There’s also a switch that allows you to use a reverse or swell setting for both effects, allowing you to create otherworldly sounding effects, or emulate classic “reversed” guitar solo sounds. The Avalanche Run also expands its versatility by being able to use both the delay and reverb sounds independent of each other, which essentially turns the pedal into both a versatile tap delay and a lush reverb. The avalanche run also features a built-in reverb effect, which allows you to create lush swells and ambient pads. It’s a stereo pedal as well, which makes it useful for both guitars or keyboards or even using it as an external effect with your DAW. The Avalanche Run is a digitally controlled delay pedal that is designed to emulate both a tape echo and a bucket brigade-style analog delay. While every EarthQuaker pedal pays homage to the great sounds and equipment of the past, they are always innovating and making unique new products with familiar sounds, and the Avalanche Run hits that nail right on the head. EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run (Our Pick!)

For those looking for the creme de la creme, our pick goes to the Eventide TimeFactor. For those on a tighter budget, we recommend the Boss DD-200. While it doesn’t emulate tape, what it does do is open up a ton of sonic possibilities with flexible tone-shaping. Yet right out of the box with a few turns of the knobs, you can create some amazing sounds. Our top pick is the EQD Avalanche Run. With all of its delay modes, shapes, multipliers, hotswitch, alternate settings, and auxiliary functions, you can spend hours, if not days, exploring a multitude of sounds. The Eventide Rose is easy to use and versatile at the same time. I love that you have unlimited control, yet can also use it as a delay/modulation pedal and keep it simple. The instructions look like a mad scientist’s chalkboard emphasizing the infinite amount of variations this pedal can produce. The functionality is incredible, unlike any of the other pedals it’s compared to.

You can come up with some crazy soundscapes if you push it to its extreme, and I like that it can go from conservative delays to insane modulation and intergalactic soundscapes. I found myself only using about 30% of the knob’s radius for general effects. The Eventide Rose has these luscious sounds and a broad range to which you can modulate its effects. I honestly don’t have the time at gigs to set up my phone or tablet to tweak an effect to a room via an app. Call me “old school,” but I like to have physical knobs that I can adjust on the fly. I liked that I did not need an app, and there were still endless capabilities in a more compact pedal. From my review of this modulation delay pedal, I found the capabilities to be mind-blowing yet simple and easy to use. I was drawn to the Eventide Rose Modulated Delay Pedal at Summer NAMM 2019 because it didn’t seem as complicated as the Eventide H9.
